Nyquist Systems introduces new product lines
The print inspection system TubeScan digital strobe has set new standards for label finishing and package printing. Now, Nyquist Systems is presenting a major extension of the current portfolio.

The new TubeScan speed strobe allows inspection speeds up to 400 m/min (1300ft/min). It is available for web widths 330mm (13"), 430mm (17"), 550mm (22"), 660mm (26")and 850mm (34").

The new TubeScan eagle view combines 100% inspection with a motorized video camera to show a detail view of register marks, barcodes, etc. down to the dot level. It is available for web widths 250mm (10"), 330mm (13") and 430mm (17").

All models feature a housing with idential cross-section dimensions. The width of the housing is only 125mm (5")

Label finishing with TubeScan Digital Strobe
The new print inspection system TubeScan digital strobe sets new standards for label finishing. On one side it replaces conventional strobe lights by showing a continuous real-time image stream of the printed web. On the other side it can perform coarse print inspection. Therefore, it can be used for the detection of missing labels, matrix residuals and missing or fading ink. Label finishing further requires accurate counting of labels or repeats. TubeScan digital strobe allows the user to define up to 20 lanes with individual defect counters. Incorporating innovative illumination technology, reflec-tive or metalized surfaces can also be processed by TubeScan digital strobe.
In general, the integration of a print inspection system into a label finishing machine can be challenging depending on the type of machine. The new module “Placement Queue” allows a very simple integration and control of the machine. Access to deeper control functions within the machine’s PLC are usually not required. Placement control is simply provided by relay outputs which are connected in parallel to the corresponding machine inputs. After activating “Placement Queue” the TubeScan digital strobe controls the start and stop behavior of the machine without interfering with other independent machine control functions. Single point or more serious defects can easily be processed. Installation of the TubeScan digital strobe is quite simple due to the compact and flexible design. A complete installation with opera-tor training typically can be done in less than a day.

Label Inspection at Barthel with TubeScan Digital Strobe

Barthel: In January, the label printer Barthel GmbH, located in Essen / Germany equipped several finishing machines with the new print inspection system TubeScan Digital Strobe+.

The system features a complete rewinder control and it is capable of detecting missing labels and coarse print defects with high accuracy. Besides print inspection the system can display the moving web as a video stream in real time, thus providing an improved alternative to conventional stroboscopes. Mischa Barthel, Operating Director, was questioned about his experiences with the new system:

Which were the main factors that led to your purchasing decision?

Mischa Barthel: The system is used instead of conventional missing label sensors. TubeScan now is used for missing label detection and is monitoring the entire web. In addition the system is counting labels per lane. The image quality is relatively good and defects can be well recognized by the operator. In comparison to 100% print inspection systems the TubeScan features a more favourable price / performance ratio, especially for applications where a high precesion 100% inspection is not strictly necessary.

How do you rate the user friendliness of the system?

Mischa Barthel:

Operating the system is quite simple, which is important, as operators of finishing machines are often temporary workers.

Do you already recognize an improvement in productivity, resp. production quality in your label finishing department?

Mischa Barthel: The production quality has been improved. More defects are detected which were previously not found by the stroboscope. The result is higher customer satisfaction.

Technical Article
New imaging technologies for label finishing
by Dr. Stephan Krebs and Ernest Schneider, published in NarrowWebTech 3-2012.

At the end of the 1960’s the first range of finishing equipment for printed
labels was introduced by Arpeco and later by Rotoflex. They were primarily
designed to convert efficiently a master roll from the printing press into smaller reels by counting the labels. Wide rolls with multiple impressions are slit into narrow reels with a single impression and a visual or automatic quality control inspects the output from the converting process. This article concentrates on the various aspects of manual and automated quality control.
